Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about filming in Spain with Silver Snow Studios
What production services do you provide in Spain?
We coordinate end-to-end production services including filming permits (municipal, regional, ICAA, DGT road closures, AESA drone authorisation), location scouting across all regions of Spain, local crew hire (camera, grip, electric, art, wardrobe, SFX, stunts), casting, equipment rental (ARRI, RED, Sony Venice packages), transport and logistics, and post-production coordination. See our full production services guide for details.
Which regions of Spain do you cover?
We operate across all of mainland Spain and the islands. Our core regions include Andalucia (Marbella, Malaga, Seville, Granada), Catalonia (Barcelona, Costa Brava), Madrid, the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza), and the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote). Each region offers distinct landscapes, light conditions, and local incentives.
What types of projects do you handle?
We service commercial campaigns, branded content, fashion films, automotive shoots, music videos, and documentary productions. Our directors have worked with brands including Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Dior, L'Oreal, Coca-Cola, Burger King, and Sony PlayStation.
What camera equipment is available in Spain?
Spain has established rental houses in Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga offering full camera packages. Commonly available systems include ARRI Alexa 35 and Mini LF, RED V-Raptor, and Sony Venice 2, with Cooke, Zeiss, and Panavision lens options. Lighting, grip, camera cars, tracking vehicles, cranes, and drones (DJI Inspire 3, Alta X) are available through local suppliers.
Do you work with international production companies?
Yes. The majority of our clients are international agencies, production companies, and brands shooting in Spain for the first time or returning for repeat projects. We bridge the gap between foreign creative teams and local crews, suppliers, and authorities, working fluently in English and Spanish.
What is the film tax rebate in Spain?
Spain offers a 30% tax rebate on the first 1 million EUR of eligible production spend, and 25% on the remainder, under Article 36.2 of the Corporate Tax Law (administered by ICAA). The cap is 20 million EUR per production. Regional incentives are higher: up to 54% in the Canary Islands, up to 60% in the Basque Country, and up to 45% in Navarra. Minimum qualifying spend is 1 million EUR for live-action and 200,000 EUR for animation. See our full tax rebates guide.
Do I need a Spanish production company to qualify for the rebate?
Yes. A Spanish production company registered with the ICAA must manage the local production and process the tax rebate application on your behalf. Silver Snow Studios can act as your local production services partner.
Are commercials eligible for the tax rebate?
Spain's incentive framework covers feature films, TV series, documentaries, and animation. Eligibility for commercials and branded content may vary depending on how the production is structured and classified. We recommend consulting a specialist for your specific case.
How long do filming permits take in Spain?
Municipal filming permits in Spain typically take two to six weeks to process. National park and heritage-site permits may require four to eight weeks. Road closures require DGT approval and Guardia Civil coordination. Drone filming requires AESA authorisation under EASA regulations. We handle the full permit process and advise on lead times during pre-production. See our full permits guide.
What are the rules for flying a drone for filming in Spain?
Drone operations are regulated by AESA under EU-wide EASA rules. Operators must register with AESA if the drone weighs over 250 grams or has a camera. Pilots generally need at least an A1/A3 certificate, and the maximum flight altitude is 120 metres. Flights in urban areas, near airports, or over protected zones require additional authorisation.
What permits do I need to film on a beach in Spain?
Filming on beaches can require up to three separate permissions: a municipal permit, a coastal authority permit, and an environmental permit if the area is protected. Many coastal municipalities also impose seasonal restrictions during peak tourism months.
Do permit requirements differ between regions in Spain?
Yes. Spain's 17 Autonomous Communities each have their own regulations, fees, and processing times. Regional film commissions (Madrid Film Office, Barcelona Film Commission, Andalucia Film Commission) are the best point of contact for understanding local requirements.
